Art exhibitions

Fri., Sept. 5– Fri., Oct. 17

America Imagines Chinese: 19th Century Advertising Trade Cards and the American Imagination, Anderson Gallery, Harmon Fine Arts Center; Opening reception: Fri., Sept. 5, 5–7 p.m.; Gallery walk conducted by Lenore Metrick-Chen. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. In conjunction with the exhibit, Drake will host a public forum on Race and Ethnicity in Public Discourse, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center. The Anderson Gallery will be open before the forum from 6 to 7 p.m.

Drake Wind Symphony Robert Meunier, director, and Drake Concert Band, Grady McGrannahan, conductor; 8 p.m., Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center. The Wind Symphony and Concert Band perform the opening concert of the 38th Annual Drake University Honor Band Festival.

Sat., Dec. 6    

Drake University Honor Band Festival 5 p.m., Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center. The closing concert of the Honor Band Festival features high school students from throughout Iowa performing as members of the Honors Wind Ensemble and Honors Concert Band under the direction of nationally recognized guest conductors.

Christmas Madrigal Dinner featuring the Drake Chamber Choir; Aimee Beckmann-Collier, conductor; 7 p.m., Olmsted Center; Tickets are $50 and will be on sale beginning Mon., Nov. 3, at the Drake Fine Arts Box Office.

"Swingin' Holiday Spectacular" featuring Drake Jazz I Andrew Classen, director; 8 p.m., Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center; Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the door and through the Drake Fine Arts Box Office at 515-271-3841. The ensemble will perform several works from its first holiday CD, "Swingin' into the Holidays." The CD will be available for purchase for $20. All proceeds will help fund the ensemble's 2009 summer tour, which includes a performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, as well as concerts in London and Paris.
