5.16 GENERAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE (GEC)
The GEC is responsible for implementation and oversight of the Drake Curriculum. It shall direct operations and coordinate work of the Outcomes Subcommittee, Advisement Subcommittee, and the First-Year Seminar Subcommittee.

Membership shall consist of at least nine faculty (one each from the four Arts & Sciences divisions and from the colleges/schools of Business, Journalism, Pharmacy and Education, and a representative of the faculty of Cowles Library), one administrative representative from CAAD, the chairs of each of the GEC subcommittees, and the Drake Curriculum Director who will serve as the committee chair.

The Outcomes Subcommittee (a subcommittee of the GEC)
The Outcomes Subcommittee is responsible for defining outcomes achievement guidelines, approving courses for Path A flagging, and reviewing individualized Path B proposals. The committee is further charged to review course offerings and to make changes in outcomes achievement guidelines or to recommend changes in curriculum that will make graduation requirements and course offerings fully complementary.

The Outcomes Subcommittee shall report to the GEC, which shall approve or amend all Drake Curriculum subcommittee recommendations and offer policy change proposals to the Faculty Senate.

Membership shall consist of at least ten members (including one faculty member from each of the four Arts & Sciences divisions and from each of the colleges/schools of Business, Journalism, Pharmacy and Education), one administrative representative from CAAD, and a representative of Cowles Library. The chair is appointed by the Executive Committee and will serve on the GEC. At least three members of the committee will also be members of GEC.

Members will be named to staggered, three-year terms.

The First Year Seminar Subcommittee (a subcommittee of the GEC)
The FYS Subcommittee is responsible for developing and implementing policy, operational guidelines, and support activities. It shall solicit, review and approve or disapprove First Year Seminars.

The FYS Committee shall report to the GEC, which shall approve or amend all Drake Curriculum subcommittee recommendations and offer policy change proposals to the Faculty Senate.

Membership shall consist of at least six faculty (four of whom will have taught FYS courses), including at least one member who is expert in the teaching of writing, at least two faculty from outside the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Coordinator of FYS, who shall serve as committee chair.

Members will be named to staggered, three-year terms.

The Advisement Subcommittee (a subcommittee of the GEC)
The Advisement Subcommittee is responsible for developing and implementing policy, operational guidelines, and support activities regarding student advisement processes.

The Advisement Subcommittee shall report to the GEC, which shall approve or amend all Drake Curriculum subcommittee recommendations and offer policy change proposals to the Faculty Senate.

Membership shall consist of at least six faculty (including at least two faculty from outside the College of Arts and Sciences) and an administrative representative from CAAD. The chair is appointed by the Executive Committee and will serve on the GEC.

Members will be named to staggered, three-year terms.
