Presented by Student Senate; President Tom Laehn full motion attached
We, the members of the Drake University Student Senate in order to ensure the fair and equitable treatment of all Drake students, to promote academic excellence, and to advocate those policies that we deem to be right and proper for the University, do herby pledge our support for the modification of the University’s 2.0 academic eligibility policy.
B) Discussion Item: from University Curriculum Committee (UCC)
In the course of the university curriculum committee’s discussions of the summer academic calendar, it became clear that there was considerable concern among faculty about several issues relating to summer teaching. There was pervasive sentiment among committee members that these issues be addressed. Among those mentioned are:
- revisiting and adjusting the methods and formulae used to calculate compensation for those faculty members who teach during the summer.
-- the need to take into consideration such factors as the length of a given course and its academic level- undergraduate or graduate.
-- reconsidering the limit currently imposed upon the number of summer courses a faculty member is permitted to teach.
Since matters relating to faculty compensation are outside the charge of the university curriculum committee, the committee urges the Senate Executive Committee to appoint a faculty group to study the issue and to undertake discussions with appropriate members of the administration to address the matter.
C) Motion from University Curriculum Committee to change the Guidelines for the Construction of the Drake University Calendar section 2 to include:
The calendar for the summer would be designated as a single fourteen-week period within which individual academic units would be able to configure their courses in a manner which best meets their circumstances, the requirements of their academic offerings and the needs of their students.
Each unit would be required to submit its summer calendar to the University Curriculum Committee for review and approval in the same manner and according to the same submission rules that apply to the university calendar
