Retirement Security

In 2010, Senator Harkin became chairman of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. The Harkin Institute draws on this background to promote study and discussion of retirement security.

In collaboration with Senator Harkin, the institute's Retirement Security Core Advisory Committee is working to identify and define the research agenda that will drive The Harkin Institute's public policy initiatives in retirement security. The committee will select timely and relevant topics that align with the Senators previous work in the area; relate to social justice, fairness, and opportunity; are nonpartisan; and require additional examination for the public good. The plans developed by the group will be implemented by a director of public policy for retirement security and overseen by a larger National Advisory Council.

The Retirement Security Core Advisory Committee comprises these four esteemed professionals who are national leaders in the field of retirement security:

  • Michael Kreps, principal, Groom Law Group
  • Donna Mueller, CEO, Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS)
  • Alicia H. Munnell, director, Center for Retirement Research at Boston College
  • Larry Zimpleman, retired board chairman, Principal Financial Group
