Wellness & Nutrition

Throughout his 40-year career in the U.S. Congress, Senator Tom Harkin was a champion for the health and wellness of the American people. Through his work on the U.S. Senate's committees on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Senator Harkin fought to make health care affordable and accessible to all citizens. Because of his longtime dedication to wellness and nutrition, The Harkin Institute has selected the issue as one of four focus areas.

Working in collaboration with Senator Harkin, a Wellness and Nutrition Core Advisory Committee has identified and defined the following research agenda that will drive The Harkin Institute's public policy initiatives in wellness and nutrition:

  • School nutrition
  • Food subsidies in school lunch programs
  • Diet's impact on climate change
