Incoming first-year students are welcome to join the Honors Program. Applications for inclusion in the Honors Program in Fall 2013 are here.
Drake University's unique Honors Program has no strict GPA requirements for participation in the Honors Program. All motivated students looking for discussion-based and writing-intensive courses are encouraged to participate.
All accepted Drake University students are welcome to apply-- priority deadline is March 1, 2013.
Incoming first-year students are encouraged to register for either
- Honors First Year Practicum, HONR 001: a one-credit course that meets one hour per week. Junior and Senior-level Honors students facilitate this class, giving you an introduction to the Honors Program, and simulating the style of discussion-based Honors coursework.
- Honors Learning Community, FYS 025/POLS 001: Students who choose to participate in the Honors Learning Community enroll in First Year Seminar section 025 and take Dr. Arthur Sanders' section of Politics 001. These students generally live in the same residence hall on the same floor, and also organize a community project/event together during the first year at Drake. This option gives you a chance to have an instant community when you arrive at Drake!
- Modern Spiritual Masters, HONR 072: This course will read, explore, and discuss the writings and vision of Abraham Joshua Heschel, Thomas Merton, and Mary Oliver. These religious thinkers interrelate their spirituality with different forms of modern thought: theology and philosophy, history and poetry, engagement with our modern world today, and ancient traditions often misunderstood and misused.
- Health: Private Industry or Human Experience, HONR 080: This course will apply sociological principles to health, illness, and health care, and will allow students to explore the perspectives of patients, providers, and society. This course is suggested for first-year and sophomore students.
or any other under 100-level Honors course.
You are not required to take an Honors course in your first year to continue with the Honors Program at Drake.
