CHARACTER COUNTS! In Iowa annually recognizes individuals and organizations that have proven exemplary in modeling the Six Pillars of Character in their communities.
Award winners were recognized at the 2009 Awards Banquet on Saturday, October 17, 2009 in West Des Moines, IA.
Congratulations to the 2009 Iowa Character Award Recipients:
Community of Character: Cedar Valley
Presented to an Iowa community that has developed an active community task force and a comprehensive, sustained community-wide initiative to support the Six Pillars of Character and have integrated character development throughout the entire community.
Organization of Character: Trinity Regional Medical Center (Ft. Dodge)
Presented to an organization that embodies and demonstrates the Six Pillars of Character in its professional culture and climate.
Educator of Character: Marilyn Clauss (Clive)
Presented to an educator or a school administrator who teaches and models the Six Pillars of Character and has impacted students through innovative character development and education in their subject areas.
School of Character: Beaver Creek Elementary (Johnston)
Presented to schools who have developed and sustained a comprehensive character development initiative to positively impact the culture and climate at the school.
Pursuing Victory With Honor: Iowa Hall of Pride
Presented to an athletic team or organization that demonstrates and models commitment to the Six Pillars of Character.
Citizens of Character: Meghan Hammen (Iowa City), Elizabeth Swanson (Cedar Falls) & Eddie Diemer (Cedar Falls)
Presented to an individual whose actions demonstrate and model continuous commitment to the Six Pillars of Character.
Character Champion: Beth Stephas (Eagle Grove)
Presented to an individual who promotes CHARACTER COUNTS! In Iowa throughout all aspects of their life.
Partner of the Year: KDSM Fox 17 (Des Moines)
Presented to a partner who has had a long-standing commitment to our mission and vision.
Ray Pillar of Character Award: Jim Hallihan (Ames)
Presented to an individual who has shown a life-long commitment to teaching, modeling and advocating good character.
And introducing the
Community Service Award: Aaron Eilerts (posthumously), Eagle Grove
Presented to an Iowan who makes their community better through volunteerism.

The State Schools of Character Awards are facilitated in a partnership with the national Character Education Partnership (CEP). CEP is an umbrella organization for character education, serving as the leading resource for people and organizations that are integrating character education into their schools and communities. Information on the SSOC application can be found here. SSOC applications are due December 1, 2009.
Note: The SSOC Awards have separate application requirements and deadlines than the Iowa Character Awards.
