English as a Second Language

If you are visiting or moving to the United States from another country, you might be surprised to learn that few Americans speak your native language. Being relatively fluent in English will greatly ease your transition and integration into your new community.

Through Drake’s Intensive English Program (IEP), international students will enhance their academic success by improving their English language proficiency and increasing their familiarity with U.S. culture. Students enjoy small classes and individual attention, and intermediate and advanced level courses are offered year-round.

We also offer short-term courses and customized programs for companies, schools, and other organizations.

Drake’s program is a comprehensive IEP that supports F-1 visas. All our senior teachers have a master’s degree or Ph.D. in language teaching.  In order to be considered intermediate, students should be able to test at a 380 or above on the TOEFL exam (taken when you arrive) or 3.5 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

For more information contact Carlyn Marron in Drake International at carlyn.marron@drake.edu, or call 1-515-271-2084.

Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–noon and 1–4:30 p.m.
