Study Abroad Opportunities

The following are study abroad opportunities available to students studying the languages offered by World Languages and Cultures.  For more information, contact your professor or the study abroad office (see link to the left.)   

 

Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish


Want to study abroad and study Arabic while you are doing it?

You can study in a few different countries depending on your current level of Arabic skills.  Students who currently have no Arabic skills can study in Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia and the Netherlands.

Students who have had 1-2 semesters of Arabic can study in Jordan and Morocco.

Are you interested in going to China to further your language skills?  For students with no experience studying the language, there are programs in Beijing, Hangzhou, Kunming, Nanjing, and Shanghai.  For students with just a couple of semesters of Chinese study, there are programs in Beijing, Nanjing, and Shanghai and for those with 3 or more semesters (at our 051-052 levels), there are programs in Beijing and Nanjing.

Students of the French language have many options for studying abroad depending on their experience.

For those with little or no experience, there are programs in Brussels, Belgium; Rabat, Morocco; Geneva, Switzerland; and both Paris and Toulouse, France.

Grenoble and Paris can be your temporary home if you have just 1-2 semesters of French in World Languages and Cultures.

Depending on your level of French study, many programs in Africa are available: Yaoundé, Cameroon; Bamako, Mali; Dakar, Senegal; and both Antananarivo and Fort Dauphin, Madagascar.  There are also 4 programs in France including the two Drake exchanges in Clermont-Ferrand, the other two locations are in Rennes and Toulouse.

More advanced students of French can study in Nantes, Arles, Paris, Clermont-Ferrand, or in Brussels, Belgium.

Opportunities to study the German language abroad are available in two different countries: Germany and Austria.  For students in with little or no experience studying German, they can go to Vienna or Berlin.  For students with an intermediate proficiency in the language (051-052 Drake Level), there are opportunities in Salzburg, Austria, or in Germany: Berlin, Freiburg, or on the exchange in Tuebingen.

Students of Japanese can study in three different cities, Tokyo, Nagoya or Nishinomiya.  Nishinomiya is the host city of the Drake exchange with Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU) for students with an intermediate to advanced understanding of Japanese.  Nagoya is an option for students with a beginners understanding of the language.  Tokyo is the place to go for students of all other experience levels from beginners to advanced students.

Russian students can study abroad in the wonderful city of St. Petersburg, Russia.  There are programs available for students with no experience and for students with an intermediate proficiency.

Spanish students have many places to travel to improve their language skills dependent upon their proficiency level.

Buenos Aires, Argentina; Monteverde, Costa Rica; Cuernavaca and Merida, Mexico; and Granada, Salamanca, Alicante, Sevilla, and Barcelona, Spain can all be your host cities if you have little or no Spanish before you leave.

In Spain, Salamanca, Barcelona, and Granada and in Mexico, Guanajuato, and in Argentina, Buenos Aires are all locations for students of beginning levels of proficiency to study.

Intermediate students of Spanish have options in 7 different countries: Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain with a few city options in each country.

More advanced students can go to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santiago or Valparaiso, Chile; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Quito, Equador; Managua, Nicaragua; Lima, Peru; or in the country of Spain: Barcelona, Toledo, Granada, Salamanca, Alcala de Henares, Alicante, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, and Sevilla.
