Iowa PIRG's New Voters Project
Something big is happening in our democracy -- young people are voting. For the past three elections, we've turned out in big numbers. The evidence also shows that when politicians talk to young people, we will vote even more. Young people will vote if the presidential candidates target us. Not just with big smiles and empty rhetoric, but with substance, engaging us in conversations about the issues we care about. Issues like global warming, college affordability, health care, and financial security. In the months leading up to the election, thousands of students will reach out to their peers on college campuses across the country to register them to vote and turn them out on Election Day as part of the Student PIRGs' New Voters Project. Overall we plan to run a national, nonpartisan youth voter mobilization campaign on 100-150 college campuses in twenty states to boost youth voter turnout in the 2008 elections.
