This afternoon (approx 12:15PM CST – 1:15PM CST) an unexpected power surge caused a network outage.  Services affected were primarily Internet service, access to Blueview, and access to backup systems.  From 1:15 – 2:45 other services were affected and restored by 2:45. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.  We will continue to look for ways to prevent this from happening in the future as well as providing appropriate redundancy for core services.

OIT/CNS will be performing maintenance on the campus network tonight (Aug 17, 2007) at 7:00PM CST.  We do not anticipate outage to core campus services and have precautions in place for redundancy and back off plans.  During this maintenance Engineers will be replacing network equipment.  In the event of unforeseen problems, a short disruption of 15 minutes or less could occur.

Due to a power failure affecting nearly all of campus, most, if not all services were unavailable. In general, the power outage began at about 3:45 pm. Services were interrupted 20-40 minutes later, as orderly shutdowns were performed. By 4:57 pm power to campus had been restored. Some services were up as early as 5:07 pm, with most up by 5:45 pm. Four exceptions were CorporateTime (up at 7:26 pm), Symplicity and the test portal (both up at 10:49 pm) and webmail2 (up this morning at 6:20 am). The outage was caused when a power pole ran out in front of a car at 34th and Hickman. 10/10/06 10/10/06

The University's Business Continuity Plan for Information Technology calls for development of a "warm-site" in Jewett Hall that will help minimize the downtime caused by damage to Dial Center. The warm-site is an equipment room where major servers in Dial Center are duplicated and can be pressed into service within 2-3 days of a disaster. As part of the preparation of the Jewett site we needed to re-position network fiber within the equipment room.As a result of the fiber re-positioning, all services were down at 6:10 am. Internet was restored at 9:00 am. Connection to Dial Center was restored at 9:50 am. Connection to Hubbell was restored at 10:15 am. Fallout from the MyDoom-A and MyDoom-B viruses are now being received on campus. Complete information is available at: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32mydooma.html. The e-mail server was updated this morning and will replace the virus laden enclosures with a text file. Your desk top Sophos will also be detecting and discarding the virus. If you receive a suspect message, please discard it. Check with the sender before opening any unexpected enclosures.You will likely receive e-mail bounced to you that you never sent to begin with. These are consequences of someone having the virus, most likely not you. Just delete these messages. 1/27/04

The process of upgrading the Blackboard service from Release 5 to Release 6 has halted while the software vendor examines problems with its migration scripts. A subtle, but persistent, software issue exists for our firewall. It selectively prevents a minority of users from connecting to the Internet. We are working with the firewall manufacturer to resolve this issue and apologize for the inconvenience.

Internet Outages

We regret that these dragged on for so long. It was not a problem being caused on the Drake campus. Our Internet service provider, Iowa Communications Network (ICN), has recently changed the mix of backbone providers with which it works. These changes have impacted the memory requirements of a key piece of equipment. At times, the equipment runs out of memory, thereby causing the traffic flowing through it to slow down and eventually stop. We have been advised that the ICN is working closely with the equipment manufacturer, and that additional memory has been installed in the errant equipment. We will continue to press ICN on the issue. The traffic slowdowns affected all member institutions in the state of Iowa. This includes the three state universities and community colleges and most of the private institutions.
