Web Server Administration Services
The Office of Network & Technical Services maintains several Netscape and Apache web servers for a variety of instruction and administrative applications. These include the main University web server and those that provide web access to email, calendar and course management services.
Publishing Pages on the Web Server
In order to publish pages on the main web server, faculty and staff must request an account on that server. Once the account is established, the faculty or staff member may upload pages to a username/password protected folder using DreamWeaver, Frontpage or other web publishing tools. Pages uploaded in this way become available for all web site visitors to see.
To request a folder on the web server send an email message to noc@drake.edu. Please include the name of the person who will use the folder and the complete pathname for the folder. For example, a new folder called csmith within the Arts & Sciences faculty tree would be: artsci/faculty/csmith. The username and password for a new account will be returned via email by the end of the next business day.
For information about pathnames and how to publish web pages, please contact the web coordinator for your department.
Please be sure to read about current web site policies and procedures. A draft of new web site policies and procedures is available.
Restricting Web Folder Access
By default, web objects posted on the web server by faculty and staff may be accessed by anyone. Access to web pages may be restricted according to one of a variety of criteria:
- access requires a username and password
- access limited to on-campus users
- access limited to faculty and staff users
- access requires use of a Drake ID and pin number
To request folder access restriction, send an email message to noc@drake.edu which includes the folder name to be protected and the type of protection desired. If you wish to use the username/password option, please include that information as well.
If you encounter difficulty accessing a folder or have other problems, send an email to noc@drake.edu with your username, telephone number and complete pathname for the folder or file you are trying to access. You will receive an email message or phone call by the end of the next business day.
Web Hosting
Most visitors to the Drake University web server do so by pointing their browser to the www.drake.edu address. However, some web projects require that a different address be used. This is arranged through a four step process performed on behalf of faculty and staff. First, the new domain address must be registered. Second, the new address must be entered into our domain name server. Third, the web server must be configured to be set up as a virtual host for the new address. Finally, an account will be created for the faculty or staff member for use in uploading pages for the site.
To request a web hosting arrangement, please send an email message to noc@drake.edu with the following information:
- name of the person responsible for the domain
- domain name desired
- number of years for which the new domain is to be reserved
charges for the domain name registration will be charged to your credit card—please call 2453 and be prepared to give card number, expiration date, type, etc.
You will receive an email from noc@drake.edu within approximately one to two weeks from the time you request the domain name, letting you know that the arrangements are complete.
