
Drake journalism students are covering the Republicans and Democrats coming to Iowa seeking their parties' presidential nominations. The students in Journalism 171 and 103 began the coverage in the spring of 1999, and a new group of students in those two courses are continuing the coverage in the spring of 2000. In mid-June 1999, the perceived frontrunning candidates
for the two major parties visited Iowa, and the
media attention picked up
considerably. Republican George W. Bush, governor of Texas, made his initial
campaign visit to the state and was followed by several hundred media representatives.
Later in the
week, Vice President Al Gore made it official--he is running
for the Democratic presidential nomination.
He made the official announcement
in his hometown of Carthage, Tenn., and then flew to Iowa to repeat
his statement.

contains a lot of interesting links, such as a kids site, GoreVision and six Internet
exclusive video. The site also includes his agenda and speeches. You can also
download bumper stickers and Gore 2000 campaign materials for your desktop. Tipper
Gore, Gore's wife, can also be followed on the campaign trail for her husband.
Gore's site is also available in Spanish.

George W. Bush
George W. Bush's Web site,
www.georgewbush.com, can be viewed in
Spanish and English, although the Spanish site does not offer all the features.
Headlines and information about Bush, who is running for the Republican nomination,
and his wife can be found on the site, as can audio clips of Bush's views and
video clips of Bush's TV advertisements. Audio will work using a Macintosh computer
using the .wav link, but advertisements require a Windows operating system to
be viewed.

Forbes
With a home page designed to look like the front page of
an online newspaper, Steve Forbes' Web site, www.forbes2000.com,
has coverage of the campaign, internship and volunteer opportunities, and a week-in-headlines
section. In addition, Forbes' site shows his positions on issues and what others
are saying about him as a candidate. On the first day the site was unveiled, Forbes,
who is running for the Republican nomination, claimed to have launched the first-ever
Internet presidential campaign.

provides the reader with campaign news, personal history and senate record of
Hatch.
John Kasich
John Kasich formally withdrew
from the race for Republican presidential nomination on July 14, 1999.

Alan Keyes has a weekly update on his site concerning important
news about him. There are also links to other sites in particular areas of the
country, including three in Iowa. And keyes2000.org
