Drake University offers its students a wide range of opportunities academically and socially. the study abroad programs extend the field of opportunity even further for many students.
However, not all students view the programs in the same way. Some students see the programs as a great opportunity, while others sugest that a semester away from this university is a waste of precious time.
The programs present an opportunity to those who wish to take it. Observing first-hand how another country deals with education, business, science and other aspects gives students hoping to work internationally a much more informed view of the world. Even students not planning on working internationally have the chance to become further educated in the ways that different people act. "I love traveling and studying abroad allows you to completely immerse yourself in a society other than your own, in ways that you never could if you were just a tourist," said Karen Scherer, (J2).
On the other hand, some students see going abroad a waste. Students who have full class loads and much to accomplish in order to graduate find that picking a location that offers credits they need dificult. "I would rather do my course work at Drake, and I don't fell like I have the time to study abroad," said Stephanie Leeson, (AS1). In addition to finding courses, affordability is another key factor in going abroad. Locations such as London are much higher in cost in comparison to places like the Czech Republic. At the same time, London has the largest selection of course offerings.
Though time constraints, course offerings and finances play a major role in going abroad, many people are willing to help students make this opportunity work. The Center for International Programs and Services, advisers and deans are willing to guide students in planning classes to ensure that graduation will be accomplished on time. Also, many abroad locations offer scholarships open to all applicants to allow anyone who wants the opportunity the chance to take it. Finally, students needing certain classes can choose locations based on those that are offered.
While studying abroad can be an opportunity, it can also hurt a student's chances of graduating on time if it is not planned carefully. In some cases sacrifices on the student's part are necessary. However, the types of sacrifices made vary from person to person.
