A little spark in the step of residents in Goodwin-Kirk came with the beginning of March. No, it isn't the warmer weather outside. It is the result of Wellness Week in Goodwin-Kirk.
Throughout the week of March 4-8, residents of G-K have been involved in various activities that promote good health, not just physical health but also mental health.
"The point of Wellness Week is to provide an outlet for students to take a break from studying and studying," Erin Scanlin (JO1) said. "It allows students to go towards a balance because school can be very stressful for them."
Scanlin is a member of the G-K executive council and the coordinator of Wellness Week. She said the response to the activities has been very good so far.
"On Monday, we had a yoga class and around 30 people came," Scanlin said. "I talked to the instructor afterwards and she was very surprised at how many people came."
Matt Roberts (AS1) attended the yoga class on Monday. He said that he had done yoga before, but it was different this time.
"I had done yoga once before this time," Roberts said. "It was nice to do it again. Plus, I learned some new stuff."
Yoga isn't the only stress-relieving activity happening this week. Meditation, games and veggie eating are all part of the activities during the week.
"It was a brainstorm of the entire executive council," Scanlin said. "We think they are fun activities that the students will both enjoy and get better because of them."
Wellness Week isn't just about wellness, though. Before every activity, participants must sign in their name and floor in a notebook. For every participant for a floor, that floor will receive points. The floor with the most points will win a continental breakfast from the G-K executive council.
"It gives the students a reason to get involved," Scanlin said.
Roberts thinks that Wellness Week is more than just a chance to feel better and let off some steam. He said that this experience is something that everyone should get involved with once in a while.
"I think the part of the college experience is to learn new things other than in a classroom," Roberts said. "This week, I have learned some great ways to relax.
