RECOMMENDED STARTING COURSES FOR SPECIFIC MAJORS
Summer 2003
Some majors at Drake are based on a four-year sequence of courses; others
simply have you start with an introductory level course which serves as a
prerequisite for upper level courses in that discipline. Please read through
the major or majors of your choice and follow the recommendations listed.

ANTHROPOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY: SUGGESTED
FIRST SEMESTER COURSE
Anth 2 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology 3 cr
ART: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES FOR ART MAJORS
Art 13 or Art 14 2D Design or 3D Design 3 cr.
Art 15 Drawing I 3 cr.
Art 75 Survey of Art History 3 cr.
All art majors (BA and BFA) have a 4-year sequence of courses, beginning
with the freshman art core. Therefore, if you are thinking of becoming an
art major we recommend that you begin with the art core courses during your
first semester.
ASTRONOMY: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES:
Phys 5 Introductory Topics in Physics
(including lab and recitation) 4 cr.
Math 50 Calculus I
(or appropriate Math level) 4 cr.
Astr 1 and 1L 3+1cr.
(to be taken either in fall or spring of first year)
No matter what the level of students, we are presently putting majors
into Physics 5. This course does not have AP Physics content. If students
believe they have advanced abilities in the subject then they can test out
of Physics 1 and 2, not Physics 5. This gives us a chance to assess them to
make sure they can "skip" courses as well as introducing them to
"new" physics.
BIOCHEMISTRY, CELL and MOLECULAR BIOLOGY:
SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES
Bio 11 General & Pre-Professional Biology 4 cr.
*Or an advanced class if you've had AP Biology and scored 4 or better - consult
your advisor
Chem 1and 3 General Chemistry I and Lab 4 cr.
*Or Chem 81, Quantitative Analysis, or Chem 107 and 109, Organic Chemistry
I with lab it you've taken AP Chem and earned a 4 or better on the exam.
For crossdisciplinary career paths, BCMB students should take the courses
above and might need to take associated courses - they should consult with
their advisor.
BIOLOGY: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES
Bio 11 General and Pre-Professional Biology 4 cr.
Bio 15 Introduction to Biology 1 cr.
Chem 1, 3 General Chemistry I & Lab 4 cr.
Majors who have taken Advanced Placement biology and get a 4 or better
on the AP test will receive elective credit for AP biology and will begin
with the biology courses listed above.
Students who have earned a 4 or better on the Chemistry AP test will
receive 8 hours credit for AP Chemistry and may begin with Chem 81, Quantitative
Analysis, or Chem 107 and 109, Organic Chemistry I with lab.
Many medical schools require a student to complete two (2) English courses
so it is a good idea to try and enroll in an English course during the first
semester or first year.
The appropriate level of mathematics must be taken during the first
year.
BUSINESS: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES FOR ALL BUSINESS
MAJORS
Acct 41 Intro Accounting I 3 cr.
Econ 1 Principles of Macroeconomics 3 cr.
To be taken either first or second semester:
IS 44 IT applications for Business (Math 20 is pre-req) 3 cr.
Math (appropriate level) 3-4 cr.
Math 28 (Business Calculus) is the required math course but students
may start at the appropriate level for them.
Students enrolling in the College of Business and Public Administration
should like and be prepared to do well in mathematics. Students with ACT math
scores <20 may have difficulty with the business curriculum because of
math requirements.
CHEMISTRY: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER
COURSES
Chem 1 & 3 General Chemistry I & Lab 4 cr.
Appropriate level of Math 4 cr.
Bio 11 General & Pre-Professional Biology 4 cr.
(Bio 11 recommended for pre-med, not required for chem majors)
Students who have earned a 4 or better on the Chemistry AP test will
receive 8 hours elective credit for AP Chemistry and may begin with either
Chem. 81, Quantitative Analysis, or Chem. 107 & 109, Organic Chemistry
with laboratory.
COMPUTER SCIENCE: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES
CS 65 Intro to Computer Science I 3 cr.
Math 50 or 54 (or appropriate level Math course) 3 cr.
ECONOMICS: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER
COURSE
Econ 1 Principles of Macroeconomics 3 cr.
OR Econ 2 Principles of Microeconomics 3 cr.
Economics 1 is not a prerequisite for Economics 2.
Mathematics 28 may be taken in any of the first three semesters. 3-4
cr.
EDUCATION: SUGGESTED COURSES FOR THE FIRST YEAR:
You are accepted to both Drake University and the School of Education. As
an education student, you must fulfill Drake University Curriculum Areas of
Inquiry (AOI), teacher education requirements, and at least one endorsement
area for Iowa state teachers licensure. Your advisor will be a School
of Education professor. Suggested first semester courses include the following:
Educ 1 Intro to Education (includes a field placement) 1 cr.
FYS of interest 3 cr.
Three/four courses that fulfill the AOI and your endorsement area(s) 9-12
cr.
ENGLISH: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSE (one of the
following):
Eng 60 Literary Study 3 cr.
Eng 61 Writing Seminar 3 cr.
Any English course numbered 20-99 3 cr.
NOTE: An FYS taught by English faculty can count toward the English or Writing
major and minor.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES
Env 35, 36 One Earth: Global Environmental Science & Lab 4 cr.
Env 15 Introduction to Environmental Science 1 cr.
Bio 1 or 11 Introductory Biological Sciences and Lab
OR
Chem 1 & 3 General Chemistry and Lab 4 cr.
If a student has a strong high school biology background (three or more courses),
the Director may waive Bio 1 or Bio 11 and suggest taking an appropriate math
or biology course.
ENV 15 is suggested, but not required for the major, and is an orientation
to Drake and the environmental field.
Choose either biology OR chemistry, but not both students should
not overload themselves with three lab-based sciences their first semester.
Students who have earned a 4 or better on the Biology AP test will
receive 8 hours credit for AP Biology and may begin with Bio 117, Ecology.
Students who have earned a 4 or better on the Chemistry AP test will
receive 8 hours credit for AP Chemistry and may begin with Chem 107 and 109,
Organic Chemistry I with lab or Chem 81, Quantitative Analysis.

*These introductory courses are not required, but if you plan to take upper-level
courses in any of these departments (and most of you will), the introductory
courses typically will be pre-requisites. Having a solid background in these
areas will prepare you for the upper-level major requirements.
Most of the major requirements are upper-level, so you won't get into your
major requirements seriously until after the first year.

for a pre-law degree plan. Rather, pre-law students should focus during their
first year or two on taking a variety of difficult and interesting courses.
Courses that emphasize writing are particularly encouraged.

PSYCHOLOGY: SUGGESTED FIRST SEMESTER COURSES
Psy 1 Science of Psychology I 4 cr.
Students who have already earned credit for PSY 1 are eligible to take any
lower division psychology course.
Students interested in a professional career in psychology, such as clinical
psychology, are encouraged to enroll in basic science and math courses. However,
such courses are not essential in the first semester

The Theatre major is different from other majors in that many skills
need to be introduced early in the student's college career.
Auditions for all first-semester theatre productions will be held August
24 & 25, 2003 in the Studio Theatre. We need men to audition!
Everyone is welcome to audition.
All PERFORMANCE BASED (BA Performance Emphasis included) theatre majors
are required to audition. Upon being cast in a production the student may
receive 1 additional credit for Thea 140 - Acting Practicum.
We do 7 to 10 productions a year, 2 student directed and 6 faculty directed,
usually.
Crew positions are available and are not limited to upper level students.

with the necessary information.
