CyberCaucus 2000 Staff

 

 The fall 1999 staff of digital•iowa consists of students in the Reporting Practicum (J-101) class at Drake University. The students simultaneously report for CyberCaucus2000 , featuring news about the upcoming Iowa caucuses. The students are responsible for reporting, writing, editing and designing the work on this site. Reporting Practicum is taught by Robert D. Woodward, Ellis and Nelle Levitt Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Drake University.

Victoria Carrington

Victoria Carrington is a senior news-editorial major at Drake University, with a May 2000 graduation planned. Her secondary area of concentration is graphic design. She is a Colorado native and has lived in Des Moines for many years. She is currently working at the Press Citizen/Shopper News Network, which publishes several community-based publications for the surrounding suburbs of Des Moines. Her responsibilities there include layout and design, copy editing, police reporting, photography and news/features writing. She has written articles for Drake Magazine, The Times-Delphic, and Recreational Review as well. Her hobbies include photography, piano, crochet, snow skiing and ice skating.

Bertha Cerda

Bertha Eugenia Cerda is a third-year news-editorial student at Drake University. She is a features writer for The Times-Delphic student newspaper, a writer for Drake Magazine, a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and president of La Fuerza Latina.

Tom Cronin

Tom Cronin is a junior news-editorial major at Drake University. He joins the CyberCaucus 2000 staff with a semester of reporting and Web design experience for the site. Cronin is also in his second year as online editor of The Times-Delphic, Drake University's student-run newspaper. He recently began work as online assistant of The Des Moines Register. Cronin is originally from Oak Lawn, Ill., and works as a resident assistant in Crawford Residence Hall. His interests include writing, reading, watching TV, listening to music and browsing the Internet.

Beth Cross

Beth Cross is a junior secondary education major from St. Louis, Mo. This year she is managing editor for The Times-Delphic, Drake's student newspaper. She also worked as a reporter for Call Newspapers in St. Louis last summer. When Beth graduates, she hopes to teach high school journalism and English, or work as a copy editor for a newspaper. In her free time, she enjoys seeing movies, watching "Felicity," spending time with friends and family, and being outside.

Nick Hillyard

Nick Hillyard, this 5'11" contender weighing in at 170 pounds, comes to us from Mediapolis (no, not Minneapolis, Mediapolis!) Iowa. A junior news-editorial major, Hillyard was recently named "Big Man on Campus." Upon graduation, Hillyard plans to put his degree to good use and go into professional wrestling. Hobbies include delivering bad service to his customers at a local eatery, driving hours on end in his spare time to party with friends for a few minutes, and making new friends on the east side of campus.

Raenelle Kwock

Raenelle Kwock is a junior news-editorial major from Honolulu, Hawaii. She decided to come to Drake University because she wanted to experience a different environment. So far, she likes snow days and blizzards but not ice! She currently works for The Times-Delphic, Drake's student newspaper, as features editor. Click here to see Kwock's T-D profile. For the past two years, she was a part-time Times-Delphic staff writer. She has volunteered the past two years to assist incoming freshmen during New Student Days. She is an active member of the Society of Professional Journalists. She is also a huge fan of the University of Hawaii's women's volleyball and basketball teams. In her spare time, she likes listening to music, shopping, attending Drake fine arts events and talking on the phone.

Kari Linder

Kari Linder is junior news-editorial major at Drake University. She's originally from Bloomington, Minn. She has served as a reporting intern for the Southwest Journal in Southwest Minneapolis and was the features editor for The Times-Delphic during the 1998-99 school year. Kari is currently working in the sports department of the Des Moines Register. In her spare time Kari enjoys in-line skating and skiing - things she finds difficult to do with so few lakes and hills in Iowa. Kari also enjoys reading anything outside of class work, writing, camping, mountain biking and being outside in northern Minnesota.

Amanda Novak

Amanda Novak is a junior news-editorial major from Plymouth, Minn. She is currently working as a reporting intern for Profits Journal in Minneapolis and as the advertising manager for Drake Magazine. She spent last summer working as an intern for the Altoona Herald-Mitchellville Index, the local newspaper in Altoona, Iowa. In her spare time she enjoys reading, swimming and twirling her hair.

Brandon Reid

Brandon Reid is a junior news-editorial major from Rockford, Ill. He is the sports editor of The Times-Delphic student newspaper, where he served as news editor last year. Reid was a sports copy assistant at the Rockford Register Star last summer. He is a fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox. In his spare time, Reid enjoys writing, watching TV and listening to music. He graduated from Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, Wis., in 1997.

Todd Ruger

Todd Ruger is originally from Central America -- Lakewood, Colo. He is working towards a news-editorial major at Drake University. In fact, he is a working towards lots of different things, including becoming a guitar player, a Web page designer, or both. After graduation Todd hopes to burn out on life, spending time riding boxcars below the Mason-Dixon line until eventually finding himself with the help of a good-looking actress-chick. He was voted most likely to host a talk show by his high school senior class.

Patrick Thornton

Patrick Thornton is a junior news-editorial and English major at Drake University. The St. Paul, Minn., native is currently interning at the Des Moines Register on the metropolitan desk. For fun, he enjoys the Simpsons, reading, writing, fly fishing, Bob Dylan and making wicker baskets for his friends and family. His friends and classmates are the first to tell you that all he does is give. After graduation, Thornton wants to carve out a little niche for himself as a writer and eventually retire to a ranch in Montana or a castle in Ireland.

Heidi Waldman

Heidi Waldman is a senior news-editorial major from Overbrook, Kan. She has worked as a copy editor for both the Drake University Times-Delphic and the Topeka Capital-Journal. Prior to that, she was a features writer for the Times-Delphic. She is an avid K-State Wildcats fan and plays French horn. In her spare time, she pretends to practice, watches too much TV and talks on the phone.

Katie Weeks

Katie Weeks is currently a junior news-editorial journalism major from Omaha, Neb., with a minor in political science. She is the Des Moines Bureau intern for the Cedar Rapids Gazette and a member of Alpha Phi sorority. In the past she has written for the on-campus paper, The Times-Delphic, and publications in Omaha including the Omaha World Herald, The Reader and DiscoverOmaha.com. This past summer, Katie was an intern at two weekly newspapers outside of Omaha, The Papillion Times and the Ralston Recorder. Someday, she hopes to be an editor with her own column at a major metropolitan newspaper where she will never retire.

Becki White

Becki White is a junior from Arvada, Colo., majoring in Internet news and graphic design at Drake University. Most of the time she can be found at her two internships at Better Homes and Gardens Online and Connie Wilson Design. She plans to be a Web page designer after graduation and hopes to work in her home state.
