We'll be accessing the World Wide Web to explore media sites on the Internet. Use this page as a departure point for information on all media areas and for quick access to the latest news. Study the course syllabus.

American Journalism Review Here you'll find provocative articles on the media role in society and an excellent collection of links to newspapers, magazines, broadcasters, news services and journalism organizations.
Asian Amerian Journalists Assocation See news concerning Asian Americans in journalism.
Columbia Journalism Review This is another of the America's major journalism reviews--based at Columbia University in New York. Take a look at its coverage of "Who Owns What?" in the nation's media.
Freedom Forum Here's a comprehensive site concerning journalism issues with a major emphasis on the freedom of the press. It includes excellent contemporary article on issues. Take a look at its Newseum for some lessons in history.
Jim Romenesko's Media News If you're interested in news and gossip from the media world, here's a highly interesting site based at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla. Check out the daily media material, and read some of the longer reports to which the site links.

Poynter Institute The institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., is a major player in American journalism and describes itself as "a school for journalists." Its superb Web site includes all sorts of contemporary material for journalists and students.
The Pulitzer Prizes Named after the legendary editor Joseph Pulitzer, the prizes are given annually to honor the top work in American journalism. On this site, you'll find information on past winners, a history of the prize, and a biography of Pulitzer, who made journalism history as editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and New York World. Search for Tom Hallman, a Drake University news-editorial graduate, who won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2001.
Society of Professional Journalists Check out this organization for working professionals and student journalists. SPJ is a major contributor to discussions concerning the role of the media in America. Take a look at its code of ethics, which is one of the key codes in the media.
Virtual Institute of Information Located at Columbia University in New York, this institute describes itself as "the global source for telecommunications, cybercommunications & mass media research." Visitors will find especially helpful the hundreds of Internet links listed under its section on Industry Watch.
On-line Books Page This is a superb resource founded in 1993 and maintained at the University of Pennsylvania by John Mark Ockerbloom. "A Celebration of Women Writers", edited by Mary Mark Ockerbloom, has been developed in collaboration with the site.
Open Book Systems Here's an innovative company devoted to putting books and other media into cyberspace. Check out an excellent collection of white papers by Laura Fillmore, president of OBS. You'll find one of her earlier papers to be especially interesting--"Internet Publishing as a Borderless Environment: Bookworms into Butterflies."
American Society of Newspaper Editors This national organization provides a wide range of material relating to the newspaper business. In its information kiosk, you'll find subjects such as diversity and career opportunities in journalism, including a listing of newspapers that are offering summer internships in 2002. Take a look at Edward Seaton's speech on "The Diminishing Use of Foreign News Reporting" for insights on international news.
Associated Press Managing Editors This group represents American and Canadian editors whose newspapers are members of the world's largest news-gathering service. From here, you can visit the web site of the Associated Press.
Editor & Publisher Visit the home page of this trade journal for the newspaper industry.
Society for News Design This organization's site includes newspapers from across the world judged as the "World's Best-Designed." You can search the site's database to find information on the winners.
Magazine Publishers of America If you're interested in magazines, here's an excellent place to start looking for information. Site also links to the American Society of Magazine Editors.Folio The magazine for magazine management.
Slate Here's an innovative magazine to be found only on the Internet and not in printed form.
MIT'S List Start here for a list of links to more than 8,000 radio stations in the United States. You can easily link to your choice of stations across the nation. You'll also find links to international stations.
Radio-Television News Directors Association Here's an excellent site for those interested in broadcast journalism. Follow the links on the site for more information.
Radio Works in United Kingdom See how quickly you can move across the world on the World Wide Web. Visit this site to find hot links in Britain and Ireland. Connect to the esteemed British Broadcasting Corporation.
TVspy.com is an excellent source for daily reports on the broadcast business, for information on job possibilities, and for other insights on the profession.
Vanderbilt Television News Archive Here's a superb site for research on television news programming. For example, the abstracts of the network television news go back as far as August 1968. According to the site, the collection now holds "more than 30,000 individual network evening broadcasts and more than 9,000 hours of special news-related programming."
American Advertising Federation The AAF describes itself as "the only professional advertising association that binds the mutual interests of corporate advertisers, agencies, media companies, suppliers and academia."

International Association of Business Communicators Take a look at this group's code of ethics for professional communicators and its excellent collection of related sites and associations.
Internet Wire Here's an Internet-based press release distribution service.
PR Newswire This public relations site provides daily worldwide news from corporations.
Public Relations Society of America This is the national professional organization for those interested in public relations work. Links within the page tie to the PR student society, where you'll find a listing of internship/job possibilities.
About.com Here you'll find a site with links to numerous major recording labels.
MP3 Start here for lots of information about MP3 recordings.
Finding Information Here's a superb tutorial site provided by the Teaching Library Internet Workshops at the University of California, Berkeley. Visit this one to see if you can answer some of the questions you have concerning the Internet.
Galileo Georgia Library Learning Online offers an excellent selection of links on the Internet, including information on the history of the Net, search units, demographics, and evaluation of material on the World Wide Web.
Webmaster's Color Laboratory An excellent resource for understanding how webmasters choose the colors for the background of their web pages, the text and the links.
Wired News The latest technological news can be found on this excellent site, part of Wired Digital's properties that include HotBot, HotWired, Webmonkey and Suck.
Yahoo! An excellent site from which to link to all sorts of computer and Internet magazines. Take some time to check out the different types.
