Tough Cases: Judges Tell the Stories of Some of the Hardest Decisions They've Ever Made

Session 1: Wednesday, July 14, Noon-1:30 p.m

"Rough Justice" featuring Judge Russell F. Canan
Faced with the real possibility that a defendant will be found guilty by a jury, Judge Canan struggles with how to navigate a harsh mandatory sentence, unjust under the facts.

"Building Justice in Kosovo" featuring Judge Edward Wilson
Assigned as an international judge by the United Nations, Judge Wilson will talk about his experience presiding over criminal cases in a country that had not fully embraced the rule of law.

Session 2: Wednesday, July 21 Noon-1:30 p.m.

"Every Case is a Tough Case for a New Judge" featuring Judge Michelle M. Ahnn
Judge Ahnn will speak about the transition from being a public defender advocating for her clients, to presiding over a criminal misdemeanor case.

"Brave Jenny" featuring Judge Gregory E. Mize
Judge Mize discusses his handling of an emotionally charged case of child neglect.

*Purchasing the book Tough Cases is not required.  However, the dialogues with our guest authors will be enhanced if attendees have read their stories. You can obtain a copy of the book through Amazon and other book sellers.
