Service Organizations

As a Drake student, you’ll find that community service is an integral part of the University experience, and there are countless ways to get involved. If service is important to you, then you’re not alone: students and staff perform more than 84,000 community service hours per academic year at dozens of nonprofit organizations throughout central Iowa.

Student-led organizations provide myriad opportunities for you and your classmates to make a difference in the community. Drake’s chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a national, co-ed service fraternity, is one of the largest student organizations on campus with more than 200 active members. Best Buddies is a group dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and Habitat for Humanity builds affordable housing in partnership with people in need—these are just a few of the ways you can get involved.

And if you don’t find an organization that’s specifically suited to your area of service, you can always start a new program. Recently, a group of students has gathered in the student union for “Feel Good Friday,” a weekly opportunity to volunteer in the Des Moines community. They may package meals one week and mentor children the next—it’s all part of an effort to make volunteerism part of their daily lives.
