I came to Drake because I knew that I could make an impact on campus and that this would be an environment that would help me achieve what I wanted to achieve. I’ve most enjoyed making an impact through Best Buddies, a student organization in which Drake students work with individuals with special needs. We’re not mentors; we’re their friends, spending time with them on a regular basis to help them develop social, leadership, and other life skills. Not only is this experience fun, it aligns well with my dream of becoming an occupational therapist and helping individuals develop the skills they need for independent day-to-day life.

One of my favorite events was our recent Best Buddies Prom; we dressed up in our formal wear and crowned a prom king and queen. It was fantastic to see our buddies’ excitement: it was the first prom experience for many of them.

Through Best Buddies I’ve become a more well-rounded person and enjoyed making connections in the community and meeting people with similar interests. The memories you make at Drake will stay with you, and they will change you.
