Health Sciences Major
My time at Drake has been nothing like what I expected.
It’s been much more.
Although I started out as a biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology major, I discovered my true passion during my First-Year Seminar (FYS). As part of the course I participated in a service-learning project at Ruby Van Meter School, which serves students with moderate to severe disabilities. My FYS experience ignited my desire to help those with disabilities, particularly autism.
Now, I’m a health sciences major with a concentration in behavioral analysis of developmental disabilities, and I’m working on a research project funded by the National Institutes of Health with Prof. Maria Valdovinos. I’ve discovered a true mentor in Dr. V and am gaining incredible research experience that will help me in the future when I apply for graduate school.
I’ve had so many experiences I never anticipated, like traveling abroad for three weeks as part of Drake’s annual Egypt seminar, joining a sorority, participating in the honors program, and working at ChildServe, a local nonprofit that helps families with children with special health care needs. I’ve found myself outside of who I was in high school and discovered what I want to do in life—Drake gave me that.
