I’m a total journalism nerd, and I’m not afraid to admit it. I’ve embraced this passion full force in my first year at Drake, where I’ve been able to take journalism courses right away. I have friends attending other schools who won’t take journalism classes until they’re sophomores—I already have a leg up.
While the courses are broad this initial year, the breadth of areas covered give me a good idea of what I might want to focus on in the coming years. The J-31 Multimedia Lab is helping me hone the skills—such as audio and video editing and photography—I will need to succeed. An added bonus: My professors already know my name, and I know I can approach them with any issues I might have regarding course work or my future career plans.
I started writing for the school newspaper, The Times-Delphic, as soon as I arrived on campus. Being involved with organizations like the newspaper, Greek life, and my residence hall executive council has provided me the support system I need to adjust to college life. And I know I’ll certainly never get bored!
It’s been just one semester, but I can honestly say Drake is my home away from home.
Drake students are doing something every day. Keep up with a few of them through their blogs.
