What has your first year at Drake been like?
It’s been awesome—an incredible experience! I had a lot of fun with my FYS (First Year Seminar)—late nights spent talking and playing board games, and just the overall experience. The classes are small and the professors are so open to you coming in and talking to them. In addition to writing for the Times-Delphic newspaper; Drake Magazine; and DUiN, a Drake satire magazine, I’m involved with the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). It’s been busy, but I love it! There’s always something fun to do. I’m so glad I chose to become a Bulldog!
Have you had mentors at Drake for your writing?
I took a writing seminar with Professor Megan Brown, which was amazing. We wrote nonfiction personal essays, and I chose to write about my debut book—The Kiss of Death, published in June 2015 under the pen name Sarah Natale. That helped me process the “why” and the “how” of my writing. She ended up writing a review for the book cover jacket, which was exciting.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m on the path toward a position as a Drake writing tutor sophomore year. I really enjoy and look forward to helping others improve their writing skills. Also, this summer I have a public relations internship with Susan G. Komen; I connected with the organization through Drake’s career fair. I’m working on another book, too. I’m always writing! I am working toward both of my career goals here at Drake: public relations specialist and novelist.
