Information for New Students

2009 students will be placed by their First-Year Seminar in a first-year residence hall. The information completed on the application will also be used in the paring of roommates such as: day or night, clean or messy, study habits and smoker/non-smoker.

When do the halls open?

For the 2009-2010 academic year . . .

   Halls will open for new students only at 8:00 am on Wednesday, August 19, 2009.
  Halls will open for returning students at 8:00 am on Friday, August 21, 2009.
  Halls will close for Winter Break at noon on Saturday, December 19, 2009.
  Halls will open for the Spring Semester at noon on Saturday, January 16, 2010.
  Halls will close for the summer at 5:00 pm on Friday, May 14, 2010. (FYE)
  Halls will close for the summer at 5:00 pm on Saturday, May 16, 2010. (Upperclass)
 

Welcome Weekend

Welcome Weekend starts on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 6:00 pm for residence hall students.

Room Assignments

Nearly all of the students on campus live in double rooms, as well as a few triple rooms. There are more than 40 three-person rooms on campus. First-year students are assigned to available spaces in the order in which the contract and $250 housing deposit were received. Most first-year students receive another first-year student as a roommate, but this is not guaranteed. Assignments will be available online beginning July 27, 2009.

*This is in accordance to the Uniform Fire Code and City of Des Moines Housing Code. Drake University carries no insurance covering personal property that may be destroyed by fire. The University suggests that students obtain insurance coverage for all personal property if they do not have such coverage already.
Linens
All halls on campus (First Year and Upper-class) have extra-long beds. Residents supply their own sheets, blankets, bedspreads, and pillows. Linen packages may be purchased through the Residence Hall Association. Information on this service will be mailed to your home address.
Smoking
The Drake University campus is a smoke-free environment as per an Iowa State Law enacted July of 2008. Hookah pipes are not allowed in the residence halls even to be stored. Should a resident be found responsible for smoking in their residence hall room, that resident will be assessed a cleaning fee of $250 at the time of the incident.
Lofts
Residence hall rooms contain wooden beds that can be bunked/lofted or used as twin beds. Only university beds are permitted in the residence halls. Beds cannot be bunked in First Year Experience residence halls.
Storage
There is no storage available on campus. Any residents needing storage will need to seek a location off campus. Information for facilities can be obtained at the hall front desk through the yellow pages.
Candles & Incense
Burning of candles, incense and similar materials is a fire hazard and is prohibited in residence hall rooms and on exterior window sills. The aroma of incense and scented candles may affect another student's health.
Pets
All pets, except fish, are prohibited, as they can create safety and sanitation hazards in the residence halls. Animals "just visiting" are also not permitted in the residence halls. Fish are the only acceptable pets permitted and may be kept in tanks no larger than 10 gallons. Fish should be removed from the residence halls during winter and spring breaks.
Telephones
As there is only one telephone line in each room, it is recommended that you discuss the acquisition of a telephone with your roommate. Each room will have shared voicemail.
Room Changes
The Hall Coordinator or Assistant Director must approve all room changes and the room change forms must be completed before a student may move into a new room. Should an unauthorized room change occur, the student will be assessed an improper room change fee of $100.00.
Drake West Village
The complexes are located adjacent to Drake's campus on 30th street and are for Juniors, Seniors, Pharm. D, Law and graduate students.

There is a two year live on requirement: Full-time students must live in a Drake University residence hall for the first two-years out of high school. The Drake West Village property is not owned nor operated by Drake University. Drake West Village is not a residence hall
THERE IS A TWO (2) YEAR LIVE-ON REQUIREMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS FOR THEIR FIRST TWO YEARS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL
