National “DU Good Day” set for October 22

Volunteerism is in our Bulldog blood. At Drake, responsible global citizenship is a core component of the mission statement. For alumni, the commitment to creating better communities never stops. That’s why the Drake University National Alumni Association is designating Saturday, October 22 “DU Good Day,” a national day of service.

Drake students volunteer for Meals From the Heartland.

DU Good Day is an opportunity to gather with other charitable alums in your area to work together on a local project to fight hunger. Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress in Drake apparel to show school spirit. The first 250 to register for this free event will receive special Drake DU Good Day T-shirts to highlight their volunteerism effort.

“This is about people loyal to Drake volunteering together,” says National Alumni Board member Erica Aronsen Axiotis, GR’07. “DU Good Day is something we can do together as a community, no matter where you are.”

So far, the organizing committee has identified 14 initial cities and regions for projects: Central Iowa, Chicago, the Twin Cities, Kansas City, Denver, Phoenix, St. Louis, Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, Omaha, Florida, the Quad Cities, New York City and Southern California. Individuals who reside elsewhere are also invited to save Saturday, Oct. 22 as a day of service.

If you’re interested in taking a leadership role with DU Good Day in your area, or want more information on how to get involved, please contact the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, 515-271-3152. Online registration for the event will open later this summer at alumni.drake.edu.

Can’t wait to pitch in? The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations is also seeking Des Moines volunteers to help staff tents at the Des Moines Arts Festival. Sign up for a shift online.
