The Drake University community is preparing for a televised, prime time debate December 10 that will bring with it top presidential candidates, hundreds of journalists, crowds of voters and — perhaps most important — a wealth of opportunities for undergraduate students.

The Patty and Fred Turner Jazz Center, which opened in winter 2010, allows students of all interests and majors to perform, book musical acts, learn musical production techniques, and enjoy concerts by local and national musicians. The 4,600-square-foot facility adjoining the Harmon Fine Arts Center features a practice and performance hall, a jazz gallery, piano alcove and state-of-the-art recording studio.

Winners of the Annual Provost Purchase Award for original student artwork add not only color, charm and life to this grand old building, but a sense of balance — demonstrating Drake’s eagerness to embrace progress while cherishing tradition and convention.

With a passion for people and for learning, Danielle Ford, a 2011 Drake graduate, says she knew a job in health care was for her. “I’ve always envisioned myself around people, and what better way to be around people than to help them,” she says. “Plus, I love learning and school. The health care field is always evolving, so I will always be learning.”

Every Friday afternoon a group of students gathers near the Pomerantz Stage in Olmsted Center to kick off the weekend with Feel Good Friday. Some are new to the event; others are familiar faces. All have come together to serve the community.
