Professor Urness is dedicated to computer science education and has been recognized as Outstanding Teacher of the Year in the College of Arts and Sciences at Drake University. His research in computer graphics and scientific visualization is interdisciplinary in nature and has resulted in numerous publications. His collaborations include professors and students from Drake University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, as well as Drake’s College of Business and Public Administration.

He also conducts a summer App Camp that introduces middle school students to computer science by teaching them how program apps for smartphones. Professor Urness earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Minnesota in 2006.

Professor Urness teaches Introduction to Computer Science I, Computer Graphics, Computer Organization and Assembly Language, and courses on iOS and Android App Development.
