Drake Opera Theater

Professional level stage experience for undergraduate students with full productions and scene work!

The Drake University Opera Theater is a performance ensemble, and therefore a listed course offering. All Drake students involved in the opera are selected through an audition process.

Drake University Faculty Member, Dr. Ann Cravero began the opera program in 2003 and enthusiastically introduced students to the charm and splendor of opera assuming both musical and stage direction. In 2011, with the program thriving, Dr. Cravero joined forces with the talented voice instructor and director Andrew Ryker (Artist in Voice at Drake).

Performances are produced in the Performance Arts Hall or Sheslow Auditorium with the full productions accompanied by the Drake Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Akira Mori.

The Drake Opera Theater provides students with opportunities to work with world-renowned directors, coaches and singers such as former Metropolitan opera singer Janet Alcorn, Drake Alumni and former Metropolitan Opera Baritone Sherrill Milnes, soprano Maria Zouves, directors Sally Stunkel, Gary Race, and Tony Humrichouser, Students of Drake Opera Theater are often heard singing and performing for local retirement homes, and providing community outreach to those in need.

The Friends of Drake Arts graciously provide a portion of the funding for productions. If you would like to be a sponsor of the Drake Opera Theater, please contact Dr. Ann Cravero.

Tickets are available at the Drake Fine Arts Box Office 515-271-3841.
