Justin Brookens

Justin Brookens is a trumpet performer and educator residing in the Des Moines metro area. Mr. Brookens holds a master of music degree in trumpet performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music as well as a bachelor of music education and trumpet performance double degree from Drake University.

He has extensive performance experience in many styles of music. He has held positions as the second trumpet player with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, principal trumpet of Indiana University’s Concert, Symphony, and Chamber orchestras, principal trumpet of the Drake University Orchestra, principal trumpet of the Drake University Wind Ensemble, and currently plays second trumpet in the Drake University Faculty Brass Quintet. He is a two-time National Trumpet Competition finalist in the ensemble division.

Aside from performing, Mr. Brookens has extensive teaching experience throughout several states. His private lessons, sectional work, adjudicating and master classes have allowed him to work with students ranging from 4th grade through college students for over a decade.

Justin is a native Kansan. When he isn’t playing music, he enjoys golfing, frisbee, basketball, and spending time with his lovely wife Jenna and their cats Oscar and Charlie.
