Thomas Sletto is currently Assistant Professor of Music Education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. His duties include methods courses for all music majors, assignment and supervision of student teachers, and advisor for the Collegiate MENC chapter.
Sletto received his B.A. in Music Education from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1975 where he studied conducting with J. Robert Hansen and Paul J. Christiansen. He completed the Master of Arts in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN in 1992. He holds an additional 45 credits of other coursework dealing with music and education topics.
He completed his Mastery Certificate in the Kòdaly approach in 1990 at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota studying with Lamar Robertson, Ann C. Kay, and Pierre Perron. He studied the methodology of Jacques-Dalcroze with Robert Abramson from the Manhattan School of Music. His Orff studies were supervised under Jane Frazee, author of many Orff-Schulwerk publications for education.
He has presented his Master’s Thesis topic to the three national conventions of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, Organization of American Kòdaly Educators, and the American Choral Directors Association. Sletto has served on boards and committees of various professional organizations including the national Organization of American Kòdaly Educators, Iowa & Indiana Kodàly Educators, and Iowa Choral Directors Association. Thomas is an honorary founding member of the Indiana Kòdaly Educators Chapter. He served for six years as President-Elect, President, and Past President of the Midwest Kòdaly Music Educators Association and was Vice-President and President of the Minnesota Elementary Music Educators. He also served as Repertoire & Standards Chair for Music in Worship on the Iowa Choral Directors Association board.
In his over 30 years of music education experience, Tom has taught vocal, general, and instrumental music to students Pre-K through adult Continuing Education Summer Courses.
