'KIDS
AND CHEMISTRY' PROGRAM SET FOR SATURDAY
Fifth graders
will make rockets out of Pringles cans, shoot off a methanol cannon, create
crazy putty and slime as well as make ice cream during the second annual
"Kids and Chemistry" program sponsored by the Drake University
Chemistry Club on Saturday, April 6.
The program,
which is conducted by Drake Chemistry Club members, will start at 2 p.m.
in room 206 of the Morgan E. Cline Hall of Pharmacy and Science, 28th
Street and Forest Avenue. After a 20-minute orientation about safety procedures
and equipment, the fifth graders will move to room 201 of Fitch Hall,
which is connected to Cline Hall by a skywalk, for the lab portion of
the program. The lab activities are expected to last an hour and a half.
"Kids
and Chemistry" is designed to give fifth graders experience in a
chemistry lab and to allow them to work directly with chemicals
many of which can be found in the kitchen or the local grocery store.
Approximately 20 fifth graders are expected to participate in this year's
program. They are all members of the Boys and Girls Club of Des Moines.
Note: The
contact person at the event is Chris Field, co-president of the Drake
Chemistry Club. He can be reached at (515) 271-3409.
