DRAKE RELAYS LECTURE
TO EXPLORE 'ICONS OF PATRIOTISM IN AMERICAN LIFE'
Drake University professor
Robert Hariman will discuss how images of soldiers, firefighters and the
American flag influence conceptions of national identity and citizen obligation
when he gives the annual Paul Morrison Relays Lecture on Saturday, April
27.
The lecture, which is
free and open to the public, is titled "Icons of Patriotism in American
Life." The event will start at 10 a.m. in room 106 of Meredith Hall,
28th Street and Carpenter Avenue.
Hariman, the Ellis and
Nelle Levitt distinguished professor of rhetoric, has been analyzing iconic
photographs for several years. He recently presented a paper on the photographic
representation of the 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square to the International
Studies Association convention in New Orleans. He also has received the
Kneupper Award for best article in the 2001 volume of Rhetoric Society
Quarterly. The award-wining article, which he wrote with John Louis Lucaites,
was titled "Dissent and Emotional Management in a Liberal-Democratic
Society: The Kent State Iconic Photograph."
The Relays Lecture was
established in honor of Paul Morrison, a 1939 Drake graduate who joined
the Drake staff in 1945 and served as director of the Drake News Bureau,
director of the Sports Information Office and athletic business manager.
Although he officially retired in 1986, he continues to give 40 to 50
hours of volunteer service every week to Drake as consultant and Drake
athletics historian.
