DRAKE STUDENTS STUDYING SHELTER TO HELP HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Drake University students in professor Lee Jolliffe's class on Shelter: The Home in American Art, Literature, and Popular Culture have been visiting both ordinary homes and showplaces in the Des Moines area. On Saturday, April 3, they'll transcend touring by volunteering their time and energy to help with the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house at 1331 McCormick St. near Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
"I wanted the students to realize how 'hands-on' any real home will be in their futures," said Jolliffe, associate professor of journalism and mass communication. "Also, the purposes of our first-year seminars include building a sense of camaraderie and friendship among the students in each class, to link them better to the Drake community and, in fact, create a sense of being 'at home' here. This seems like a good way to do that." Jolliffe said her class is unusual because it has a high percentage of international students, including students from Kenya, Botswana, Trinidad and Tobago and South Africa. "The class has become a cluster of friends -- from the shared experiences and from our often-surprising discussions of differences between and among all their homes and the homes we are visiting," she added. Among the places the class is visiting this semester are Terrace Hill, Salisbury House, Living History Farms, exteriors of West Des Moines homes, including the "Jetson house," and Jolliffe's home. The students also have taken a "virtual tour" of typical shelters in each student's homeland and around Des Moines using the Polk County Assessor's Web site.
