UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PROF TO DISCUSS MARRIAGE AND RELIGION

Donald Browning, professor emeritus of the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, will give a lecture on marriage Tuesday, April 13, at Drake University. The Harriet Drake Kirkham-Hay Lecture, which is free and open to the public, will start at 7:30 p.m. in Bulldog Theater in Olmsted Center, 29th Street and University Avenue.

Browning's speech is titled "Is Marriage Like Driving a Car? Religious Perspectives on the Material Aspects of Intimacy."

Professor Browning has long been interested in the relation of religious thought to the social sciences, specifically in the way theological ethics may employ sociology, psychology and the social scientific study of religion. A student of psychology, he has special interests in psychoanalysis, self-psychology, object-relations theory and evolutionary psychology.

An ordained minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ,) Browning is now working on issues pertaining to the shape and future of the postmodern family as director of the Lilly Project on Religion, Culture and the Family. He is co-author of "From Culture Wars to Common Ground: Religion and the American Family Debate."
