DRAKE LITERACY CENTER SEEKS VOLUNTEER TUTORS
Fifteen people seeking to improve their reading and writing are waiting for tutors at the Drake University Adult Literacy Center.

"Imagine going through a day without being able to read signs, labels, e-mail messages and newspapers. Imagine not being able to write a phone message, to fill out forms at the doctor's office or job applications," said Anne Murr, coordinator of the center. "That's what life is like for the people on our waiting list.

"We are in great need of volunteers who want to give the gift of literacy by tutoring an adult or a child in the family of an adult served at the center," she added.

Volunteers receive training and materials. They meet for an hour twice a week at the center, which is located in the Drake School of Education, 3206 University Ave. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

For more information, call (515) 271-3982, or send an e-mail message to anne.murr@drake.edu. The center will be closed from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1, reopening on Jan. 2.
