DRAKE FACULTY ART EXHIBITION TO OPEN JAN. 23
The Anderson Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "ART AND SOURCE,"
an exhibition of recent work by the faculty of the Drake University Department of
Art and Design, on Tuesday, Jan. 23. The opening reception will take place Sunday,
Jan. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibition, which runs through Feb. 14, is free and
open to the public.
Twelve faculty members are participating in this biennial exhibition, which this
year includes source objects and materials chosen by each artist to provide the viewer
with a deeper understanding of what inspires and influences artists in the process
of creating their work. A wide range of art and design will be on view, including
painting, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, interior architecture and drawing.
In addition to these traditional categories, examples of work by art historians will
also be on view, expanding the context of the exhibition to include the role of art
interpretation.
"'ART AND SOURCE' is a rare opportunity for viewers to gain insights to the
diverse range of research methods and ideation of the faculty in the Department of
Art and Design," said Robert Craig, associate professor of art and chair of
the Department of Art and Design.
Participating faculty are Angela Battle (painting), Erika Brask (graphic design),
Phillip Chen (printmaking), Robert Craig (sculpture), John Fender (graphic design),
Maura Lyons (art history: American), Maureen Seamonds (sculpture), Saral Surakul
(interior architecture), Gaylord Torrence (Native American Studies), Ignatius Widiapradja
(painting), Connie Wilson (graphic design), and Ed Wong (drawing). Drake's art faculty
are all practicing artists, designers and art historians, who are professionally
active locally, regionally and nationally.
The Anderson Gallery in the Harmon Fine Arts Center, 25th Street and Carpenter Avenue,
provides Drake students and the Des Moines community the opportunity to experience
the visual arts, past and present. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through
Sunday. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. For more information call
