FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 9, 2000 CONTACT: Lisa Lacher, (515) 271-3119 'TAKING PICTURES' - A FILM ABOUT DOCUMENTARIES - TO BE SHOWN AT DRAKE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 15 Drake University's Cultural Studies Film Series will present "Taking Pictures," an inquiry into the practicalities, politics and aesthetics of the documentary experience, at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, in room 206 of the Pharmacy and Science Center, 2802 Forest Ave. The showing is free and open to the public. In "Taking Pictures," Australian filmmakers Les McLaren and Annie Stiven focus on several Australian filmmakers and their internationally renowned documentaries. The film reflects on the Western tradition of inquiring into and recording other people's lives, and raises questions about Western domination of representation and filming other cultures. A discussion led by Richard King, assistant professor of anthropology, will follow the 56-minute film.
