DRAKE SPEAKER TO ADDRESS GOVERNMENTALITY
AND THE SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION
Cameron McCarthy, an author who teaches mass communications theory and cultural
studies at the University of Illinois, will speak at Drake University on Monday,
March 26. McCarthy's speech, which is free and open to the public, is titled "Governmentality
and the Sociology of Education: Media, Educational Policy and the Politics of Resentment."
The speech will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Honors Lounge of Medbury Hall, 1317 28th
St.
McCarthy is a distinguished research professor and university scholar in the Institute
of Communication Research at the University of Illinois. He is currently on leave
at the University of Cambridge in England. He has published widely on topics related
to postcolonialism, problems with neo-Marxist writings on race and education, institutional
support for teaching, and school ritual and adolescent identities.
He is author or co-author of the following books: "Race and Curriculum,"
"Race Identity and Representation in Education," "The Uses of Culture:
Education and the Limits of Ethnic Affiliation," and "Sound Identities:
Youth Music and the Cultural Politics of Education."
His forthcoming book from Routledge Press is titled "Multicultural Curriculum:
New Directions for Social Theory, Practice and Policy." He also is finishing
a book with his graduate students titled "Governing the Present," which
is scheduled to be published this fall.
