JURIED STUDENT EXHIBITION TO OPEN APRIL 1
AT DRAKE UNIVERSITY'S ANDERSON GALLERY
The 30th Annual Juried Student Exhibition featuring more than 100 works of art
will open at the Anderson Gallery, Drake University, on Sunday, April 1, and run
through May 2. The opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will
take place from 1 to 3 p.m. April 1. The awards ceremony will start at 1:30 p.m.
The 30th Annual Juried Student Exhibition features paintings, prints, drawings, photographs,
jewelry, sculpture, graphic design and interior design. These works, ranging in style
from the figurative to the abstract, were selected from 170 submissions.
Charles P. Helsell, director of the Blanden Memorial Art Museum in Fort Dodge, Iowa,
served as juror for the exhibition. He also selected the prize-winning works. Six
students received a "best" award in a specific category, and 13 students
were awarded honorable mention for their work.
Helsell said that his first reaction upon surveying the entered work was one of "exhilaration;"
he was impressed with the wide range of new creations. The Provost Purchase Award
recipient was chosen by the faculty of the Department of Art and Design. Students
receiving awards will be identified at the awards ceremony. Funding for the awards
comes from the Thad Archie Memorial Fund. The Annual Juried Student Exhibition is
supported by the Friends of Drake Arts.
The Anderson Gallery is located in the Harmon Fine Arts Center at 25th Street and
Carpenter Avenue. Through its active exhibition schedule, the gallery provides Drake
students and the community at large the opportunity to encounter a wide range of
visual arts, past and present. The Anderson Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday,
noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (515) 271-2863. |
