'CARBON' EXHIBITION TO OPEN AT DRAKE APRIL 1
The fourth annual "Carbon" exhibition at Drake University will open
on Friday, April 1, showcasing cross-disciplinary works by 15 visual artists
and 15 students from fields such as advertising, business, chemistry, education
and pharmacy and physics. The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7
p.m. April 1 on the second floor of Cline Hall of Pharmacy and Science, 2802
Forest Ave. The exhibition will continue through April 20.
Angela Battle, assistant professor of art at Drake, began the annual "Carbon"
exhibitions in 2002. Each year she randomly pairs studio arts students with
students from outside of the arts. Each pair meets and exchanges ideas, then
creates a new work that represents a fusion of ideas. Battle said the title
of the exhibition was inspired by the collaborative nature of carbon, the elemental
glue of all organic life.
In previous years, "Carbon" was displayed in the Anderson Gallery.
This year, Battle chose Cline Hall, which houses the College of Pharmacy and
Health Sciences, because she wanted to "integrate the exhibition into spaces
that house disciplines other than the arts as a way to further illustrate its
university-wide nature." The exhibition can be viewed Monday through Sunday
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
