DRAKE LAW SCHOOL TO HOST COMMUNITY FORUM ON IMPLICATIONS OF ELECTION RESULTS
Even as the country sorts through the confusion of Tuesday's presidential election,
the Center for Legislative Practice at Drake Law School will host a community forum
about the constitutional and election law implications of the historical event. The
forum will begin at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in room 213 of Cartwright Hall, 27th
Street and Carpenter Avenue.
Larry Pope, director of the center, and Robert Hunter, professor of law, will facilitate
the discussion. "This is an event of huge political proportions," said
Pope. "It's natural for a country's citizens to have lots of questions about
how we got to this point and what the ever-changing vote total means. There's really
two issues that are on center stage of this political drama: one has to do with the
ultimate legal consequences of the election; the other surrounding the court of public
opinion."
Pope said he wants people to come to the forum with their questions and opinions.
"Perhaps an unexpected benefit of the closely contested race is that people's
passion for participatory democracy has been rekindled. Unfortunately, electing our
leaders had become a rather sleepy event in our country. 'Every vote counts' was
just rhetoric. Now all of a sudden, people are paying attention."
