COMMUNITY IN DIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS FIRST SPEAKER
The Community in Diversity
Lecture Series at Drake University will host its first speaker, Dr. Federico
Subervi, at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, at
Sheslow Auditorium, in Old Main, 2507 University Ave. The lecture is free
and the public
is invited to come and hear Subervi speak about changing demographics and
the images and participation of Latinos in the communications industry. The
series
is being co-sponsored by Drake's School of Journalism and Mass Communication
and the College of Business and Public Administration.
Subervi serves as director of the Latinos and Media Project in Austin, Texas.
For more than 20 years, he has been teaching, conducting research and publishing
various works on issues related to mass media and ethnic groups, especially
Latinos in the United States. He was also the first to systematically analyze
the mass media systems in Puerto Rico, his home country. In addition to his
academic work, Subervi serves on editorial boards, and has been an advisrr
or consultant to various public and private groups such as Nickelodeon, Scholastic
Entertainment, The Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Fox Family Worldwide.
The Community in Diversity Lecture Series was created to provide Drake University
and surrounding communities an opportunity to hear diverse cultural viewpoints
of today's media and professional atmospheres. Speakers are invited to give
a public lecture and teach several journalism and business courses during
their visit to the campus.
