NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED GRAPHIC DESIGNER TO SPEAK AT DRAKE UNIVERSITY OCT. 17
Marc English, owner and creator of Marc English: Design in Austin, Texas, will give
a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in Levitt Hall in Old Main at Drake University,
26th Street and University Avenue. In his presentation, which is titled "Fertilizing
Minds/Growing Ideas: A Brief Guide to the Way of the Design Shaman," English
will use Iowa's agricultural-based economy as a metaphor for design and creative
inspiration. A reception will precede the lecture at 5:30 p.m.
The lecture, which is sponsored by the Drake Department of Art and Design, is open
to the public. Admission is $20 with online registration or free with a Drake ID
or American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) membership.
English has built his reputation by creating a body of work that focuses on identity
- the heart and soul of any individual, institution or corporation. He is the author
of "Designing Identity: Graphic Design as a Business Strategy," a series
of industry-specific case studies that provide insight into the role design plays
in creating a strategy for success.
Before opening his own studio in 1993, English worked in communication design for
Fortune 500 clients and broadcast design for ABC-TV's Boston affiliate. Among his
current clients are Hearst Corp., Heinz USA and Sun Microsystems. He also has created
museum exhibits for national and international clients.
English, who lectures frequently, has received numerous awards from organizations
such as the AIGA, American Center for Design, American Advertising Federation and
American Corporate Identity. He also has taught at the Massachusetts College of Art,
the New England School of Art and Design and Southwest Texas State University.
In addition to the lecture, English will participate in a panel discussion featuring
graphic design professionals at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, in Levitt Hall in Old
Main. The event, "What Professionals Look For: A Discussion of Resume and Portfolio,"
costs $20 with online registration or free with a Drake ID or AIGA membership. For
more information, call (515) 222-5495 or visit www.aigaiowa.org.
