ADULT LEARNERS, TUTORS TO DISCUSS READING AT LITERACY SPEAK-OUT AT DRAKE UNIVERSITY WEDNESDAY
Adult
learners and volunteer tutors will discuss their struggles and triumphs
as they've tackled and overcome reading problems during an Adult Literacy
Speak-Out at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, sponsored by the Drake Adult
Literacy Center.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Parents
Hall North in Olmsted Center, 29th Street and University Avenue.
Started in 1976, the Drake Adult Literacy Center currently serves 40 adults
and has a waiting list of 20 adults seeking to improve their literacy skills.
"
We have three goals for the Speak-Out," said Anne Murr, coordinator of
the center. "We hope to raise community awareness of the causes and challenges
of reading problems, to inform community members who need literacy help that
assistance is available, and to generate community support for the Adult Literacy
Center."
Tutors are needed for the Drake Adult Literacy Center. Tutors receive training
and then meet one-on-one with a client twice a week at the center in Drake's
School of Education, 3206 University Ave. For more information, call (515)
271-3982 or send an e-mail message to anne.murr@drake.edu.
