FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 21, 1999 CONTACT: Lisa Lacher, (515) 271-3119 DRAKE SPEAKER TO DISCUSS NEW MEDIA MONDAY Jay David Bolter of the Georgia Institute of Technology will speak at Drake University Monday, Sept. 27, on reading, writing and visualization in computer environments. His speech, titled "Remediation: Understanding the Challenge of New Media," will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Honors Lounge of Medbury Hall, 1317 28th St. The event, sponsored by the Drake Center for the Humanities, is free and open to the public. Bolter is the Wesley professor of new media in the School of Literature, Communication and Culture at Georgia Institute of Technology. He also is the author of Storyspace, a program for creating hypertexts for individual use and World Wide Web publication. His work with computers led to the publication of "Turing's Man: Western Culture in the Computer Age" in 1984. Since then he has published several more books, including "Writing Space: The Computer, Hypertext, and the History of Writing" (1991); "The Future of the Book" (1996); and, with Richard Grusin, "Remediations: Understanding New Media" (1999).
