DRAKE FORUM TO FOCUS ON CENTRAL AMERICA
Drake University will hold a forum on "Facing the Challenges in Central
America" from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic
Student Center, 1150 28th St. The event is free and open to the public.
The keynote speaker will be Larry Weiss, the labor, globalization and human rights
coordinator for the Resource Center of the Americas, which is based in the Twin Cities.
In addition to speaking, Weiss will show a video titled "The Human Effect of
Globalization in Central America." He also will join in a panel discussion with
Drake students and alumni who have traveled to Nicaragua. The participating students
will include Sam Brooke, Sheila McCoy, Brad Mason, Seth Harrington, Jennette Gallagher
and Sara Barton.
The forum also will feature an art exhibit of watercolors depicting scenes from Nicaragua
by Mark Horwedel, a Vermont resident who traveled to Nicaragua last May as part of
a Drake travel seminar led by faculty members Daniel Spencer and Nancy Reincke. The
travel seminar was titled Crossing Borders/Cruzando Fronteras: Nicaragua and the
U.S. at the Close of the 20th Century."
Sponsoring the forum are the Drake's Department of Philosophy and Religion, Honors
Program, La Fuerza Latina, Latin American Studies Program and Multicultural Studies
Program as well as the Catholic Peace Ministry and the American Friends Service Committee.
