Talk of the Town

Welcome to Talk of the Town, the public forum for airing opinions, gripes and predictions on issues of interest to CBPA faculty, students and graduates.

What one piece of advice would you give the unemployed on successfully finding a job in a tight employment market?

"Better yet, how about three pieces of advice? Networking, networking, networking."

- Robert Foersterling CIMA, BN'68, senior vice president, wealth advisor, senior consultant, ICS, MorganStanley

"I think one of the most important things that I've learned over the years is the need to have a good coach. A good coach will help you focus your search on a specific result, define a purpose behind this result and then develop an action plan to achieve the result. I have picked people that are traditionally inside the industry and that have a different perspective. "

- Christopher Witte, BN'89, GR'90, director of category management, Pepsi-Cola Company, Chicago

"Be willing to explore job opportunities outside of your comfort zone. Best case scenario: You may find interests and talents you never knew you had. Worst case scenario: You work in a job you may not care for, but you develop skills that could make you more marketable in other venues."

- Teresa Denton, BN'97, captain, U.S. Army, Uijeongbu, South Korea

"View your job search as a full-time job. Spend time each day working on finding a job, whether you are updating your résumé, contacting employers or networking. Finding a job takes time and the more time you devote to it, the faster you will see results."

- Connie A. Zubler, Esq., BN'90, director, Office of Career Services, University of Colorado School of Law, Boulder, CO

"In times like these I would advise finding the right company. Do not get hung up on finding the ‘perfect position.' Choosing to work for a company where you can advance and have a future beyond the position you accept is critical. Many companies today are hiring qualified candidates from within, which means if you aren't already employed with that company, you will never get the shot at the ‘perfect position.'"

- Scott Thomas, BN'92, District Sales Manager, DHL/Airborne Express, Dallas

"My advice for the unemployed: work for free."

- Rebecca See, BN'02, U.S. Peace Corps, Lenger, Kazakhstan
