DRAKE OPERA THEATRE PRESENTS AN EVENING OF MENOTTI
Opera theatre once flourished at Drake University. After a decade that passed
with few performances, Ann Cravero and her students plan to re-create the passion
for the opera on Drake’s campus. On Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April
30, the Drake Opera Theatre will present two comedic operas by Gian Carlo Menotti.
“Amelia Goes to the Ball” and “The Telephone” will be
performed each evening in the Performing Arts Hall, Harmon Fine Arts Center,
25th Street and Carpenter Avenue. The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m.
“When I was given the opportunity to direct the opera theatre at Drake,
I knew that the initial years were going to be years of rebuilding relationships,”
said Ann Cravero, opera director and visiting assistant professor of voice.
“This has been one of the most gratifying parts of my job.”
A combination of professional musicians and Drake students will take part in
the production. Cravero believes the performances will be entertaining and educational
for individuals within the production, as well as the audience.
“I love to see the change in people, participants and viewers, when they
realize that opera can be funny, moving, entertaining and ultimately a whole
new experience in the world of singing,” she said.
Tickets for the performances cost $12 for adults and $6 for seniors, students
and individuals with a Drake ID. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Fine
Arts Center Box Office or by calling (515) 271-3841.
The opera theatre productions are made possible by Drake University, The Friends
of Drake Arts and sponsors. For more information on the opera theatre, call
