DRAKE'S RAYSOCIETY TO HOLD ANNUAL MEETING WEDNESDAY
The Billie and Robert D. Ray Lifelong Learning Society at Drake University offers
programs and courses on a variety of topics targeted at retirement-age people
interested in learning in a college atmosphere. Those who wish to learn more
about the RaySociety and its offerings for the 2005-06 academic year are invited
to attend the group's annual meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, in Sheslow
Auditorium in Old Main, 25th Street and University Avenue. The meeting will
be followed by a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception at 4 p.m. in Levitt Hall
in Old Main
The society takes its name from a pair of distinguished Drake alumni, former
Iowa Gov. Robert D. Ray, who also served as the University's president, and
Billie Ray, former first lady of Iowa and a former schoolteacher. The Rays plan
to attend Wednesday's meeting and reception.
"We are extremely honored to be part of and committed to the concept of
lifelong learning for people of retirement age," Bob Ray said. "We
support this concept with enthusiasm and lend our name with pride because of
the great opportunities it offers all of us as we continue to grow. The energy
and excitement of Drake University, the vibrancies within the Greater Des Moines
area and the interaction between and among adults contribute to an expanded
quality of life that we all seek."
The RaySociety has approximately 175 members. The annual membership fee is $50.
Classes, which will start again in the fall, meet during the day, Monday through
Friday, and are taught by volunteer instructors from the current and former
Drake University faculty, from the society membership and the community. The
registration fee is $25 per class.
